The Catahoula Leopard


The Catahoula Leopard dog is an ultimate working dog, full of tireless stamina and energy that defines their breed. They are excellent at herding and hunting. With a solid, strong body, a deep chest, and muscled legs, the Catahoula Leopard dog gives off a highly capable aura. Its coat is single, short, and coarse with a merle pattern that typically complements its eye color as well.

Catahoula Leopard Skills

The Catahoula Leopard dog is thought to have been descended from Nordic wolfhounds some three centuries before the Spanish found America. It is also thought to have been descended from war dogs such as greyhounds and mastiffs when Hernando de Soto arrived. Louisiana is said to be its point of origin; it is the designated state dog. Their skills in herding are still very much in use, particularly in herding livestock such as pigs, boars, and cattle, and they are also known to hunt deer and squirrels as well.

Catahoula Leopard Personality

Catahoula Leopard dogs are highly assertive. As a watch dog and a guard dog they will protect their owner and their property with a lot of action as they are very loyal. Catahoula Leopard dogs can also be aggressive other pets of the same sex. They can be around children if they have been socialized with them at an early age. Novice owners are not recommended for this breed, as they need a firm hand due to their excessive energy and aggressiveness.

Exercise Needs

The Catahoula Leopard dog should have at least an hour of daily exercise. It is extremely agile and it is recommended that the owner should have a yard for it to play in. The Catahoula Leopard dog can be quite rough in playing, though, so make sure that it knows where the boundary lies.

Living Conditions

The Catahoula Leopard dog is very much at home with life in the country, herding livestock and having various outlets for their boundless energy. If they are to live in the city, make sure that their work skills are not ignored and that there are outlets for their energy.

Grooming Requirements

The Catahoula Leopard dog needs minimal grooming aside from a good brushing at least once a week and sporadic baths throughout the year. It is an average shedder.

Health Issues

The Catahoula Leopard dog can have problems with hip dysplasia and eye problems. Breeds with white coats can have problems with blindness and deafness.
