Dog Laika

Animals have had a long history with space travel and from as far back as the 1950’s; these brave animals have been paving the way for human space-farers. Animal testing is terrible, yet before medical science knew any better it was an acceptable pursuit. Monkeys, fish, hamsters
and dogs have all been part of the space program long before a human slipped into the spacesuit; this all came to an end in the early 90’s, but the legacy of these animals lives on in the examples which we have highlighted below

The Dogs From Russia
The Soviets loved their canine friends and created the most famous canine space explorer ever with Laika, a stray female dog who flew in the Sputnik II rocket in 1957. Sadly, she did not survive the ordeal and died of heat exhaustion before making it back into the atmosphere. In 1960 and in the Sputnik V, two stray dogs however did manage to survive the flight into space and as a bonus, the daughter of president Kennedy was given one of their puppies!
